I Called Him 'Grandpa': Chocolate, Part I

Grandpa believed in 'spoiling' us. There was never a single time when we visited Grandma and him, and he didn't have a special treat for us. Most of the time, it was fresh grapes - which for us was a huge treat. Other times, it was cookies of extra candy; 'extra' because he always had a dish of chocolates for us to sneak into.

The dish of chocolates sat in the middle of the living room, on a little table between two armchairs. It was possible to sit very casually in either of the armchairs and have easy, subtle access to the chocolates. There was usually a rota of children (and Mom) who would sit in an armchair for 5-10 minutes, then stand and wander around for a while, leaving the dish ever-so-slightly less full than it had been.

At the end of each visit, Grandpa would walk past the dish, do a mock double-take, and tease about how those candies disappeared so suddenly! Everyone would grin sheepishly, and Mom would laugh as she licked the last bit of chocolate out of the corner of her mouth.

(It was also not uncommon to later find chocolate wrappers all over our van...)
